KRDA Andrew Wekesa Memorial Tournament is an initiative to remember posthumously the fallen Kenya international rugby player, who died in January 2017. Andrew Wekesa played for Homeboyz RFS as a prop forward since 2011 and previously has played for Impala Saracens RFC for 1 year in 2014, Kenya Simbas as a tralist and Kenya U19s at the 2011 Rugby Africa U19 Championships.
He last featured in the Kenya Cup on Saturday 10th December 2016 but walked off with a knee injury. He was expected to return in February, but he succumbed to injuries due to an unfortunate attack on his way home before he resumed playing.
The Tournament will be an annual partnership, between Kings Rugby Development Academy, Homeboyz RFC and Impala Saracens, to remember the passionate player, and use the proceeds of the tournament to support his family and further the development of rugby talent in Kenya.
Homeboyz RFC already retired jersey no 18, in memory of Andrew Wekesa and to serve as indelible reminder of the memory of the moments he shared with his fellow team mates at Homeboyz RFC.
KRDA Andrew Wekesa Memorial Tournament will be officially launched on 13th April 2017, by Jason Leonard OBE former world cup winner and england RFU president, assisted by Dr. Hassan Wario , cabinet secretary Sports, culture & arts, Homeboyz RFC officials, Impala Saracens RFC and KRDA fraternity.
